Most states mandate that anyone convicted of a domestic violence offense must complete a court-approved program consisting of weekly 2-hour group sessions for a period of 16-52 weeks.  John Hamel and his staff at John Hamel & Associates conduct such a program in the San Francisco Bay Area, serving convicted clients, as well as individuals referred through Child and Family Services, Family Court and those seeking help on a voluntary basis.  This 5-hour seminar, typically delivered over the Zoom platform, now makes the program available to certified batterer intervention providers, or facilitators-in-training.  The program mees the requirements of California PC 1207.098, and can be adapted to meet guidelines set in most other states. Features:

  • Overview of relevant family violence research
  • Detailed, week-by-week review of Facilitator’s Manual and the weekly lessons
  • Thorough review of 100+ page Participant Workbook, including introduction, progress logs, informational handouts and exercises
  • Master copies of Facilitator Manual and Participant Workbook provided free of charge to all facilitators for future use at their agency

The 16-52 week program is suitable for adult men and women who have been convicted of a domestic violence offense, as well as for any individual who has been verbally and/or physically abusive towards his or her intimate partner. Psychoeducational, small group format encourages client participation, while providing practical strategies for overcoming aggression and improving relationship skills.  Workbook includes progress logs and weekly exercises to facilitate learning. The program addresses intimate partner and family violence, and covers: the dynamics of partner abuse, power and control, socialization of violence, gender roles, the impact of domestic violence on children, anger management, coping with stress, communication and conflict resolution skills.

Testimonials

I am a criminal defense attorney in San Rafael, California, and have been working with John Hamel for many years in my domestic violence cases.

I have benefited from his trainings, have consulted with him regarding various cases, and regularly refer clients to his court-approved domestic violence perpetrator groups because his compassionate, evidence-based treatment approach is superior to the confrontational style used in other programs."
